News From the Schools
by Tommie Whitt and Kathleen Hanrahan
The news around here is Graduation. I have nine graduates for Greenville Tech. They are: Wayne Barton, Karen Bickel, Stan Darnell, Melissa Friddle, Rewa Gist, Samaa Hussein, Keri Jackson, April Monta, and Susan Moore. We all would like to recognize all of the graduates from the different programs.
Also, there was a Student Bowl held this year. One of the Greenville Tech students answered the most questions correctly - Stan Darnell. Tri-County had the 2nd runner up. Kathleen Hanrahan at Florence-Darlington Tech was the coordinator for this year's bowl
The nth annual SCASCLS Student Bowl was held at Midlands Technical College on Friday, March 22nd. The MT/MLT educators could not determine when it all started. The winning team is posed with Mary Breci South Carolina Chapter President. Mathew Genobles of Spartanburg Tech, Stan Darnell from Greenville Tech, Artika Patel from Tricounty Technical College and Ann Sauls from Trident Tech.
Kathleen Hanrahan from Florence Darlington Technical College and Vicki Anderson of the McLeod School of Medical Technology served as the hostesses with the mostest! The entire Bowl is a community effort with all the educators coming together to make it happen. Mary Breci from Midlands Tech graciously provided the site once again, because of Midlands''s central location in our state. Polly Kay and Dallas Jones have provided a wonderful notebook so that the hostesses did not have to recreate the wheel! Educators served as judges, timekeepers and provided door prizes. The McLeod MT students served as scorekeepers. Polly Kay recreated her terrific role as the emcee for the event. It takes a microbiologist to do those words!
Through the generosity of the Society refreshments were provided for 130 students and educators. Awards went to the winning team and also the 3 highest scorers of the day.
The next Student Bowl will be hosted by York Technical College at the Midlands Tech Campus.

Carolinas Clinical Connection 2002, "A Grand Experience" By Libby Haile, Committee Chair
The 2002 annual meeting of the North and South Carolina clinical laboratory organizations was held at the elegant, new Grandover Resort in Greensboro on April 8-10, 2002. Libby Haile (NCSCLS) was Chair of the planning committee this year.
The meeting began with the Awards Ceremony at 1:00 pm on April 8, followed by the opening Keynote Address by Laura Hamilton. Laura is well known in the Southeast as an insightful and extremely humorous speaker. Her presentation had us ready to enjoy our educational sessions and our networking opportunities!
The general session on Tuesday was "Medicine, Magic and Murder; Medicinal and Poisonous Plants", given by Pamela Coker, a plant physiologist (and MLT) from Clemson University. This was a thoroughly enjoyable look at the both the beneficial and deadly uses of plants.
The closing session on Wednesday morning was presented by Ann Daniels and focused on dealing with change. Ann's presentation benefited us all as we continue to adapt to the constantly changing conditions in the clinical laboratory and in healthcare.
In between these were sessions dealing with bioterrorism, Hepatitis C, Sickle Cell Disease, transfusion issues, breast lavage cytology, leadership, the POL Symposium on Quality Assurance, and a number of other topics. On Monday evening, there was a reception opening the exhibits. They have had an excellent response from the vendors and recruiters, so this was a great opportunity to check out what's new on the market.

Past Presidents of SCSCLS
by Dan Southern, NCSCLS
This is the current list we have of the past-presidents of SCSCLS. If you know of anyone that should or shouldn't be there, let us know so we can fix it. Also, if you know their address whether you think it is current or not, let us know. There is a Past Presidents luncheon that they get invited to each year so we want to make sure the list is correct.

We decided that we will extend the deadline for the SCSCLS scholarship to June 1, 2002. I have sent out an e-mail to the educators regarding this. We decided that we would limit it to one scholarship of $500.00 for either an MLT or MT student instead of one for each division. The 2001-2002 SCSCLS Awards and Scholarship Committee is proud to make the following presentations to several special individuals in our society. Omicron Sigma Omicron Sigma is the President's Honor Roll for outstanding service during the past year. Each individual named receives a certificate signed by the SCSCLS President and a memento of their selection for this honor.

Keys to the Future
This award recognizes new members who have less than three years of membership, or who were
previously inactive in our state, but have recently become more involved. Each constituent society is
allowed only two members, and this year we have an extremely noteworthy selection. For 2001-2002, I am
happy to announce our Keys to the Future recipient is Marion Boatwright. Marion has given many hours
of hard work to our society this year, and we hope she will continue to apply her skills and energy in future
leadership roles within the society.
SCSCLS Donald O. Cox Vendor Service Award
The Donald O. Cox Vendor Service award pays tribute to those individuals who have served and supported
the goals and activities of SCSCLS as representatives of their respective companies and agencies. Through
personal commitment to our society and professional commitment to excellent service, each acts as
ambassador of good will between the clinical laboratories and the business world. The award this year is
presented to an individual who grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, and began his sales career in a family
owned company while attending the University of South Carolina. After earning a Bachelor of Science
degree from USC in 1987, he went on to acquire a Master of Health Administration in 1994. After a brief
stint at Lexington Medical Center for his Master's residency, he returned to the family business, Hawthorne
Medical Equipment Company, as a Business Development Coordinator. During this time frame, he
continued to develop and hone his skills as a sales representative, and then, in 1996, he put these skills and
his business knowledge to use as a member of the sales force for Infolab, Inc. He has gone on to become an
exemplary consultant and leader among his peers, becoming a member of the prestigious "President's
Club" for sales excellence. In 2001, he was the recipient of one of Infolab's highest awards, "The Sales
Representative of the Year", an accomplishment proudly shared by his wife, Paula, and their 2 children. As
a member of his professional world, he has served with outstanding dedication to quality and personal
integrity. He has been described as possessing the attitudes most treasured by both employers and
customers - upbeat, positive, competent, thorough, with a genuine regard for his customer's success. The
hospital community has praised him as a sales representative who can be relied on to go the extra mile to
help his customers. One aspect among his many excellent traits is his enthusiastic willingness to offer
service to the education community in his area. He actually makes service calls to the educational
facilities and goes beyond the call of duty in helping find products and solve problems. Both his
General Manager and Sales Manager praise him for his outstanding commitment to service, his belief that
there is no such thing as a bad day, and then they follow these praises with a wish for 20 more just like him!
For his distinguished professional successes and his outstanding dedication to the laboratory community
and SCSCLS, it is my distinct honor to present the 2002 Donald O. Cox Vendor Service Award to Richard
W. Abbott.
SCSCLS Member of the Year
This year the SCSCLS would like to recognize an individual whose commitment to the profession and our
society has been so intense that it challenges each of us to examine our own dedication in helping this
profession move through some of its most difficult times. With boundless optimism and tireless
enthusiasm for the tasks ahead, she has served as a standard by which each of us should be measured. At a
time when the society needed a strong, positive leader, she took the helm and has been quietly, but firmly
guiding this society towards a better future. She single-handedly built the path needed for this society to
survive in this electronic age, keep updated, and stay in touch with our constituents. As a graduate from the
Baptist Hospital Medical Technology Program, she worked many years there and progressed to role of
Chemistry supervisor. After she started a family, though, she left the clinical world for the new role of
motherhood, but her dedication to this profession never took a leave of absence. In fact, from the home
front she became even more involved, gluing the pieces of this society together with kindness and
determination. She is a Past-President of SCSCLS, who currently serves as the Chair for the ASCLS
Publications Award Committee, the SCSCLS Treasurer, and editor of the state newsletter, Probe. Because
of her long-standing active participation in this society and all of its facets, it should be no surprise to
anyone in this audience that this is the second such recognition for this recipient. Although she was unable
to be here today, I would like for you to join me in a round of applause in deep appreciation for the
tremendous personal commitment to the society exhibited by our 2002 Member of the Year Terri J.
Leszczyszyn.
