News from the Schools
by Ann Smith and Tommie Whitt

Trident Technical College will offer a new Phlebotomy certificate program beginning in Fall 2001. The program can be completed in two semesters, and will include clinical experiences in a wide variety of health care facilities, including large medical centers and small physician office labs. The program is designed to allow students to attend classes in the evening; clinical rotations can be tailored to fit the student's schedule wherever possible. If you are interested in "getting your foot in the door" in a medical career, contact Ann H. Smith, Department Head Diagnostic Services, at (843) 574-6067 at Trident Technical College.

In celebration of NMLW, the senior students created a display to be placed in the lobby to promote MLT. All Greenville Technical College MLT students celebrated with a pizza luncheon on Thursday. They are proudly displaying NMLW buttons around campus that week.

Four seniors will graduate on May 10 at GTC! Congratulations to them...Harriet Lappin, Robyn Strickland, Melissa Szymanski, and LaTrina Simpson.

Carolinas Clinical Connection Was a Success
by Terri Leszczyszyn

CCC was held this year on March 21-23, 2001. Sponsoring Organizations for this annual event were North Carolina Society of Clinical Laboratory Science, North Carolina State Society of American Medical Technologists, North Carolina Association of Blood Bankers, North Carolina Society of Cytology, South Carolina Society of Clinical Laboratory Science, South Carolina State Society of American Medical Technologist, Palmetto Blood Bankers Association, South Carolina Society of Cytology, and Clinical Laboratory Management Association - Pee Dee Chapter of South Carolina.

The keynote Address this year was given by Iwana Guess Ridgill, PhD, and was she good! Dr. Ridgill is an adjunct faculty member in the Continuing Education Division at Midlands Technical College in Columbia, South Carolina, and is a graduate of the University of South Carolina. She conducts staff and management development training programs for businesses and organizations in the public and private sector. She speaks often on motivational and job-related topics such as customer service, dealing with difficult co-workers, conflict resolution, and projecting professionalism in the workplace. You could tell that she especially enjoys the topics related to motivation on the job in her "Take This Job and Love It" as she gave it a humorous twist; it really made our day. There was also the general session given by Robert Ball, MD, MPH, which was good as well.

Society Meetings were held Tuesday evening and Wednesday afternoon. All sessions were approved for PACE and AMTIE credits. Various subject and sessions were in Hematology/Coagulation, Microbiology, Chemistry, Blood Bank/Immunology, Management, Education, and Cytotechnology. Students were offered workshops at a minimal fee for those who are members of laboratory science societies. There was also a student mixer as well as the poster sessions they displayed at the exhibit area.

Awards for both states' societies were given out before the keynote speaker. There was an early bird catered reception for the attendees and a wine and cheese event while you explored the exhibits.
