Mary E. Leonard Receives ASCP Lifetime Achievement Award
by Ruby Sonnett

Of all the alumni who graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1947, very few are still actively working in their chosen profession. One special "Golden Grad" who continues to practice as a clinical laboratory scientist (medical technologist) is Mary Eileen Leonard. In recognition for her 50 plus years of service and many contributions to the profession, Ms. Leonard was recently flown to San Diego, CA, to receive the Associate Member Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). The award honors an Associate Member who has demonstrated a commitment to the profession through work, attitude, and Society activities.

Ms. Leonard has spent her life committed to professional involvement, education, and integrity. Among her numerous professional accomplishments, she helped acquire the charter for our state professional society in 1951 and then served in many leadership roles, including twice as President of the South Carolina Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (SCSCLS). She has received the Outstanding Medical Technologist for the state twice, had both a state society and MUSC student scholarship named in her honor, and received the 1993 College of Health Professions Distinguished Alumnus Award.

In the educational arena, Ms. Leonard served as the Program Director for the Medical Technology Program at MUSC for 11 years and was a faculty member in the College of Medicine for all of her 33 years at MUSC. She is currently an instructor at Midlands Technical College and is the In-service Educational Coordinator at Roper Laboratory, a position she has held for all of her twenty-year tenure at Roper. She adds this role to her regular duties as Supervisor of Immunology and Parasitology.

In addition to the long history of service in education and laboratory medicine, Ms. Leonard has served the community at large in many capacities through her membership in the Civitan Club of Charleston and Sacred Heart Church. In fact, her devotion to children has inspired her years of work with the Jenkins Orphanage and other outreach ministries for both children and families. In response to her many achievements in many local and state arenas, Ms. Leonard was recently named the Alumnus of the Year for the College of Charleston.

Friends and colleagues have long applauded Ms. Leonard's reputation for excellence in both her professional and personal life. Now, with the recent national recognition of her professional accomplishments, complemented by the local college honor, she can take her well-deserved place among the most respected and cherished citizens of South Carolina. The faculty and staff of the College of Health Professions and the Medical University of South Carolina offer our sincere congratulations to Ms. Leonard.

"A special message to the society....."

I want to thank all of you for the beautiful roses I got in Columbia and the gift certificate to the Charleston Grill.

The meal was really delicious and very memorable. I have felt so honored since October with all of the honors that have come to me. Please let the society know how deeply grateful I am.

Thank you for everything,

Mary Eileen "

Other SCSCLS Awards from March 21, 2001

The 2000-2001 SCSCLS Awards and Scholarship Committee is proud to make the following presentations to several special individuals in our society. We promised to keep this brief, and I'll do my best…..

Certificate of Appreciation

SCSCLS would like to express its gratitude to Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College for the invaluable assistance given to our state society throughout the year. To acknowledge the many services provided to our society and its members, SCSCLS would like to present this Certificate of Appreciation to Bonnie Fanning, SCSCLS President and faculty member at Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College.

Mary E. Leonard Student Scholarships

The Mary E. Leonard Student Scholarships are presented to the applicants who best fulfill the criteria required by SCSCLS. As a currently enrolled MLT or MT student, each recipient must validate the award monies of $500 are utilized for school fees. The 2000-2001 MT recipient is Eric Lee, a first year student in the Master of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science program at the Medical University of South Carolina.

(The society will award the MLT Mary E. Leonard Student Scholarships later this year.)

Omicron Sigma

Omicron Sigma is the President's Honor Roll for outstanding service during the past year. Each individual named receives a certificate signed by the SCSCLS President and a memento of their selection for this honor.

State recipients: Beth Blackburn, Mary Breci, Flossie Rose-Drociuk, Terri Leszczyszyn, Michelle Mantooth, Vivian Smith, Roxianne Snodgrass, Ruby Sonnett, Marcia Wood

Regional Recipient: Bonnie Fanning

Keys to the Future

This award recognizes new members who have less than three years of membership, or who were previously inactive in our state, but have recently become more involved. Each constituent society is allowed only two members, and this year we have an extremely noteworthy selection. For 2000-2001, I am happy to announce our Keys to the Future recipient is Barbara Harrison. Barbara has given many hours of hard work to our society this year, and we hope she will continue to apply her skills and energy in future leadership roles within the society.

SCSCLS Donald O. Cox Vendor Service Award

The Donald O. Cox Vendor Service award pays tribute to those individuals who have served and supported the goals and activities of SCSCLS as representatives of their respective companies and agencies. Through personal commitment to our society and professional commitment to excellent service, each acts as ambassador of good will between the clinical laboratories and the business world. The award this year is presented to a person who has worked as both a member of our professional world and a representative of the service world. He served in both worlds with outstanding dedication to quality and personal integrity. This individual began his career as a staff technologist at McLeod Regional Hospital in 1971 and eventually became Laboratory Manager and Chief Technologist at Carolina Healthcare System in 1978. After moving into the sales for Fisher Scientific in 1982, he received numerous accolades for his service work, including election into the President's Club in 1986 for his excellence in selling. Now, if you are counting, that means all of us will be helping him celebrate 30 years of professional work and service in 2001!! On a more personal note, in a business world known for its tremendous varieties of sales personalities, this gentleman chooses to exhibit a calm, congenial attitude of helping the client and a quiet determination for completing all tasks….accurately! (It's that QA background in chemistry, I'm sure!) For all of his distinguished professional successes and his outstanding dedication to our society, it is my distinct honor to present the 2001 Donald O. Cox Vendor Service Award to David Lee Eury.

SCSCLS Member of the Year

This year the SCSCLS would like to recognize an individual whose commitment to the profession and our society has literally taken her on the road. With a high level of optimism, a passion for working for the profession, and an intense desire to get everyone involved in our society, this professional has demonstrated an incredible abundance of energy amid many personal hurdles.

After attending school at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and graduating from the Spartanburg General Hospital School of Medical Technology as a CLA in 1964, she worked at that same facility until 1971. Since that time she has worked at several healthcare facilities until her present location at Greenville Hospital System. Not only did she enjoy the work, but she also obviously found the profession she enjoyed studying. Since those early years, she has also acquired an Associate Degree from Spartanburg Technical College in 1984 and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Carolina at Spartanburg in 1988. For the SCSCLS, she has always been a dedicated member seeking to help our state society grow through the Membership Development Committee, which she chairs. No one in our organization displays more optimistic enthusiasm for our professional success than this lady has demonstrated over the past several years. In deep appreciation for her tremendous personal commitment to the society and the accomplishment of its goals, it is my distinct privilege to present the 2001 Member of the Year Award to Vivian B. Smith.

An Invitation From Shirley Hilton

In April, lab directors, managers, and supervisors from around S. Carolina

were invited to attend a breakfast and networking event at Lexington Medical Center. A group of 35 met and discussed current issues of interest to labs, such as the new LMRP's affecting metabolic profiles, staff recruitment/retention issues, etc. At the next meeting (June 15), Trudy Solomon and Diane Paschal from the S.Carolina Hospital Association, will attend to discuss the metabolic profile issue and other topics of interest from SCHA.

S. Carolina lab directors/ managers/ supervisors are invited to attend a meeting on Oct. 8, 2001, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Lexington Medical Center, W. Columbia. Tammy Grubbs will speak on "The Efforts of One Hospital to Meet the New HIPAA Requirements." A light lunch will be served at a cost of $5 per person. Contact Shirley Hilton or Susie Greenthaler @ 803-791-2400 if you are interested in attending. At the group's last meeting, Sylvia Singleton, Dr. Harry Feliciano and Margaret Anne Cox from PGBA attended and spoke to the group about the LMRP process. [If you view this after the invitation date, contact Shirley or Susie for details as to what happened.]

The Region III Caucus Meeting in Chicago

By Terri Leszczyszyn

Lynn Ingram of Tennessee is our Region III Director now. They held two Region III meetings this year, one in Tuskegee, AL, and the other in Orlando, FL.. They discussed among other things membership decline nationally, personnel shortages across the US and Montana's fight to keep lab testing performance by trained lab personnel. She talked about collaborative efforts made with CLMA, AMT, Children's Miracle Network and other organizations. She handed out the Region III leadership roster and all states had a President and President elect and the appointed positions were held by TN, MS, AL and GA. She reminded us of the need to buy our national medical laboratory week items through ASCLS so they will get the profits. ASCLS web site is also offering PACE approved CE. The next meeting will be held in GA October 12 and 13. The next publication will have more on the Chicago ASCLS meeting as well as pictures taken there.
